The cracks in the planet's crust, initially thought to be caused by tectonic activity, are actually lasting marks of enormous roots burrowing through the earth. At some point in the past, a mutation, possibly induced by sapient beings, caused the native plant life to grow uncontrollably. Many of these plants reproduce through pollination, with countless gametes carried by currents in the lower atmosphere. What was once a mild irritation escalated, as the increase in atmosphere-borne particles choked the life out of all animals on the planet within months.
