Feather Rot

Based on what we have discovered thus far, this civilization was no stranger to tragedy. Ancient records stored in some kind of crypt or mausoleum detail the emergence of a great plague, one which afflicted the species' avian physiognomy in particularly gruesome ways. First manifesting in the plumage, the virus caused feathers to rot at the root. Within days, these effects had spread to the blood. We cannot know for certain, but early estimates place the mortality rate at over 30%. A poignant monument was erected in one of the city's central squares. Atop a mound of bones, a single, skeletal bird looks hopelessly to the sky, its fallen feathers strewn about a pair of brittle talons.
