The machines were huge energy cutters, flying around in orbit cutting and sculpting the surface landscape with powerful laser beams. One of the machines contained data fragments that explained that the entire planet-shaping project was a custom job ordered by an unknown client, indicating some market-driven civilization of tremendous capability. This just gave a whole new meaning to the concept of terraforming.
